Fulbright lecturer from China plans PCC visits | PCC News

April 21, 2010

I attended this lecture yesterday since I’m soon to become part of the faculty of Portland Community College. The lecture was sparsely attended, which I found unusual being that the college has four campuses in the Portland area and that Dr. Tang’s topic was the US and Chinese economies and how they mesh. His presentation was interesting and troubling.

Dr. Tang feels that the two countries’ economies compliment each other since, from his perspective, US demand for goods is high and manufacturing capabilities are declining and that Chinese manufacturing is outpacing what its own country needs. He mentioned China’s dependence upon the continued vitality of the American economy since his country is so heavily leveraged in it.

His final comments addressed what each country needs to do in order to make the best of their economic relationships. For China, he espoused the need for the privatization of business among other things. For the United States, he suggested that we join the movement toward the “one-world order” and the common international currency.

What Dr. Tang is suggesting is that the United States drop down to the level of other countries in the area of economic production rather than continue its capitalistic ways. In so doing, rather than helping other countries through our technological, entrepreneurial and philanthropic capabilities, he suggests we give these up in exchange for a worldwide mediocrity that would no doubt result. Giving up ourselves to the rest of the world economically will also lead to us giving up our freedoms to despots who will rule over the one-world economy. Dr. Tang may have an good understanding of what is happening economically between the US and China, but he has the typical socialist/communist suggestions for change.

My Tax Time Pet Peeve

April 15, 2010

Well, tax time itself is a pet peeve for most of us, but here’s my specific gripe.

I use PC software to prepare my tax returns. A couple of years ago, I tried the e-file thing… $20 and I don’t have to hassle with printing and mailing the forms and the return comes sooner. Unfortunately, that wasn’t my experience. After spending the twenty bucks and submitting my information, I got an email back saying that my submission wasn’t accepted. Supposedly I had already e-filed and the IRS saw my submission as a duplicate and rejected it. Excuse me? I hadn’t already filed my taxes. But, complain as I did, it was to no avail. What really frustrated me was when I went back to the software company (I won’t tell you it was TurboTax) to get a refund of the $20 filing fee. “I’m sorry sir, but it wasn’t our mistake so you don’t get your money back.” That was the last time I e-filed… until last night.

The only reason I chose to e-file this year was because we’re getting back money from our blessed government, it was going to get my refund to me quicker, and it wasn’t going to cost me anything… for the federal return. The state return was still going to cost me $20, but that was a $10 savings from the “regular” cost. Wowee! And that brings me to my pet peeve.

E-filing was supposed to accomplish a bunch of things. 1) I assume the Paperwork Reduction Act (which no one has ever really explained accurately to me) is some savings thing for the government. 2) By e-filing, I’m saving some poor data entry clerk from having to enter my tax returns into the government’s big ol’ computer systems, thus saving the government more money. 3) By e-filing, my tax return is getting into the government’s big ol’ computers more accurately, so that the aforesaid data entry clerk’s supervisor doesn’t have to spend a lot of time reviewing the clerk’s accuracy, thus saving the government more money. You get my drift?

With all these benefits to the government, WHY DO I HAVE TO PAY TO E-FILE? The government ought to PAY ME to e-file! It’s not like I’m doing this tax thing because I like it. It’s not fun. Where’s the incentive for me to file my taxes, short of staying out of jail for not doing something that some will argue the government isn’t allowed to do in the first place? Ah, yes… the topic of whether or not the federal government has the right to levy an income tax on me at all. That’s another story for another day.

Happy Tax Day, everyone.

Obama team points to smaller deficit numbers

April 13, 2010

Yet another example of figures lying and liars figuring.

There is NO good news in this article, in spite of the catchy title. First, $1.4T deficit versus $1.2T deficit… where’s the joy in that? Next, we are comparing apples to oranges when we look at the two time periods mentioned in the article. A year ago, Obama was spending like a drunken sailor thanks to TARP and the Obamaulous package. Just because we didn’t “spend” as much in this year’s period doesn’t mean that the money set aside won’t be spent. I suggest that we are in a “manufactured lull” in spending to make numbers appear better than they are OR the administration STILL doesn’t know where the last bunch of pork spending went… in other words, it hasn’t been accounted for. Then, the article admits that taxes are up. Wahoo! As Paul Harvey used to say, “now THAT’S true value!” The article also mentions the fact that the unemployment figure isn’t significantly better today than it was a year ago. Where are all those jobs the porkulous bill was supposed to create, huh Mr. President? Finally, the most ironic part of the article… Ben Bernanke states that we have to be careful lest we spend ourselves into a bad economic situation. This is like the little kid who is playing with matches and when the house catches on fire, yells HELP!

Sorry for the bad news everyone, but the economy is NOT getting better. Wall Street is acting like it is. The administration is talking like it is. But, the basic fundamentals of good economic policy are all skeewampus and I don’t see how anything short of a real economic CORRECTION will solve the problem, iykwim… imho… ttfn… ttyl. 🙂

Nuclear Posturing, Obama-Style – Opinion – PatriotPost.US

April 12, 2010

Mr. Krauthammer once again zeroes right in on the essence of the topic. I’ve been around long enough to have watched our country go through some difficult and scary situations where nuclear armament lurked in the background. From my experience, a position of strength is the only place where our country wants to be at this point. Years ago, nutty countries like Iran, Pakistan, Syria and North Korea didn’t have access to nuclear weapons… the nuclear game was really played by only two countries, the USSR and the United States. China eventually developed a nuclear capability, but their involvement in strategic nuclear arms negotiations wasn’t a serious matter. The Chinese were recognized as having the weapons, but they weren’t considered to be serious players in the game.

Anyway, now we have nuts like Ahmadinejad, Kim Jong-il, ex-Pakistani leader Pervez Musharraf, and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. They possess nuclear technology and, supposedly, nuclear arms. These nuts are also unknown quantities. They’ve proven that they’re not interested in negotiating about nuclear arms control. They’re just plain dangerous people.

President Obama should scrap his mamby-pamby approach to nuclear arms control and follow the example of one of his predecessors… President Ronald Reagan. I believe our country is in greater danger from the possibility of a nuclear attack than it has ever been. Where we have focused our attention on missile deterrence, we now have the added concern of attacks from within our own borders by terrorists who could smuggle small nuclear weapons into America. Only from a position of strength followed up by no-nonsense communication to the rest of the world can we hope to ensure our future safety.

Opponents of Liberty organize to collect SSN’s from Tea Party participants

Oregon Tea Party: Opponents of Liberty organize to collect SSN’s from Tea Party participants

Date: April 8, 2010
From: Geoff Ludt, Oregon Tea Party

Portland, Oregon – Oregon Tea Party State Coordinator Geoff Ludt today released information obtained from public websites regarding tactics the opponents of freedom may use during the upcoming April 15th Tax Day Tea Party events. Not only are groups organizing to disrupt the numerous Tea Party events, but one site has offered a plan to collect sensitive personal information from Tea Party participants. According to, “See just how much info you can get from these folks (name address, DOB, Social Security #). The more data we can mine from the Tea Partiers, the more mayhem we can cause with it!!!!â

Writing on, “The Mad Hatter” urges readers to “Check Your Local Tea Party Website For Details” of April 15 events. He goes on to say, “We’re going to attend their rally, but plan to have a bunch of truly ludicrous signs. Things that say “Obama drinks Christian Baby Blood” or “Jesus wrote the constitution”. The more misspelled words the better…You could also dress in overalls with no shirt, or a stained “wifebeater” t-shirt, But you get the general idea. Some other thoughts are to ask people at the rally to sign a petition renouncing socialism. See just how much info you can get from these folks (name address, DOB, Social Security #). The more data we can mine from the Tea Partiers, the more mayhem we can cause with it!!!!”

There have been numerous efforts by the American Left and their allies in the news media to try and paint Tea Party participants as angry, white, illiterate, corporate-funded stooges”, said Ludt. âWhile Tea Party protestors are certainly angry about out-of-control federal spending, crushing debt, the destruction of America’s health care system, and disregard for our Constitutional protections, the remaining adjectives are just Left-wing talking points, as “The Mad Hatter’s” blog post demonstrates. Tea Party activists are polite, law-abiding citizens who are voluntarily exercising their constitutional rights to peacefully protest and bring their list of grievances to their government. This stands in sharp contrast to The Mad Hatter and the Left who think nothing of taking disruptive action against peaceful protesters.”

Oregon Tea Party alerted local law enforcement to the possibility of disruptive tactics and potentially engage in identify theft through asking for Social Security numbers or other personal information. Federal law prohibits the collection of Social Security numbers except in specific instances.

The Tea Party movement has grown exponentially in the past 12 months, proving itself a threat to those who see more government spending, higher government debt and more control of American’s personal and economic lives as a desirable outcome.

The New “Nuclear” Normal

April 8, 2010

“Obama also says the nuclear arms treaty he and Medvedev signed Thursday in Prague set an example for Iran and other nations by showing that the world’s two leading nuclear powers would abide by international obligations.”

Hitler was a lunatic… mentally deranged… he was so narcissistic that his belief was reality. I’m not calling Obama another Hitler, but I am saying that I see commonalities in the behavior of the two. There is no logic in Obama’s foreign agenda (let alone the rest of his antics) other than to follow this warped sense of reality that he has. Please America, let’s make November count!

My Responses to Some Items on facebook

April 7, 2010

“And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor.” — Declaration of Independence

Their once was a super power that became as a result of that quoted document. We have let down our forefathers by letting the enemy from within convince us that there is no Divine Providence, that it’s wrong to pledge to each other that we will defend ourselves from our enemies, that our lives are worth nothing, that fortunes are to be amassed to equally redistribute to those who are not willing to work for their keep, and that honor is no longer a sacred thing.

Unlike Pelosi and Obama, who I believe are downright evil, I think Harry Reid is more clueless than anything else. With fools and despots leading us, November is a critical month for this country.

QUOTE OF THE DAY: (Wednesday) “No people can be bound to acknowledge and adore the invisible hand, which conducts in the affairs of men more than the people of the United States. — Every step, by which they have been advanced to the character of an independent nation, seems to have been distinguished by some token of… providential agency.” George Washington

Like I mentioned in another forum, remember the words of Edmund Burke when he said that all evil needs to succeed is for good people to do nothing. As little as our contribution may seem, we can’t give up the fight. If we don’t try to do something to change the political climate, who will? November may be the most important month to the American people than we’ve seen in generations.
