January unemployment rate drops to 9.7 percent – Yahoo! News

This story is so full of conflicting information that I just don’t believe it to be true.

Unemployment goes down when last month’s jobless claims rose unexpectedly? But half a million people supposedly had jobs last month as opposed to the month before. Seasonal jobs went away, but they’re back.

Quote: “Until some of these uncertainties from Washington get cleared up, businesses, particularly small businesses, are going to be loath to do any additional hiring,” said Hank Smith, chief investment officer at Haverford Investments.

Quote: The economy has shed 8.4 million jobs since the downturn began in December 2007, up from a previous figure of 7.2 million.

I’m not going to try to make sense of it. All I know is that I’m unemployed and that those in my network tell me that things aren’t getting better any time soon.

There’s an old adage that may or may not apply: figures lie, and liars figure.
