Michigan Man Sues for Right to Put Back Family’s Nativity Scene on Public Median – Local News | News Articles | National News | US News – FOXNews.com

This article refers to a Supreme Court decision (Allegheny vs. ACLU of Philadelphia) that set the precedent for these ridiculous injunctions against individuals who want to display their Christmas nativity scenes. I completely reject the Supreme Court’s decision wherein they stated that allowing such displays is the same as the government declaring a state religion. That premise is about as valid as saying that Bill Clinton’s frequent stops at McDonald’s were the establishment of a state fast food restaurant.

What I don’t understand is why otherwise intelligent people (legislators, attorneys, judges, etc.) can read the few words in the First Amendment devoted to this subject and get them so messed up. Just because the government lets people exercise their freedom of speech to display their religious beliefs, it doesn’t mean that the government is establishing a state religion. When it comes to displays of a religious nature, it’s as if there is no free speech. Here is a situation where the free speech of the government trumps the free speech of its citizens. Kinda like eminent domain… the government shuts you up because it thinks it has better things to do with your speech than you do.

Come to think of it, if the government is cutting off Christians in order to not offend Muslims or atheists or whoever, couldn’t that be construed as the government favoring one religion over another (i.e. establishing a state religion)?
